Key Vocabulary

As you are learning about the Age of Exploration and the different explorers that have impacted the New World, make sure to learn these new vocabulary words and understand what they mean. You may even want to try to use them in your interview script.

Vocabulary Word:	Definition:
navigation	Navigation is the process of planning or directing the course of a ship or vessel from one point to another.
expedition	A journey organized by a group of people to explore new territory or land for a purpose.
conquistadors	They are Spanish conquerors that came to the New World in search of gold and other riches. It is the Spanish word for the soldiers and their leaders who conquered the Native Americans of the New World in the early 1500s.
missionary	A missionary is a member of a religion who works to convert those who do not share the missionary's faith. It is a person who travels and attempts to spread a religion, usually in a foreign country, and attempts to persuade or convert others to their own religion.
colony	A territory or land settled or conquered by a people who leave their country for the purpose of expanding cultural, economic, or political power. They settle a new land and maintain relationships with their homeland.
slave	A person who is owned by another person as their property. They are forced to work without pay.
slavery	Slavery is a social-economic system under which certain persons — known as slaves — are deprived of personal freedom and required to perform labor or services.
territory	An area of land; a region. The land and waters under the jurisdiction of a government. A geographic region, such as a colonial possession, that is dependent on an external government.
route	An established or selected course of travel or action.
colonizer	to make or establish a colony : settle
New World	The New World is another name for the Americas (or the Western Hemisphere).
Old World	The Old World is another name for the Eastern Hemisphere (Europe, Asia, and Africa).
strait	A narrow channel joining two larger bodies of water.
caravel	A caravel is a type of two- or three-masted sailing ship developed in the 1400s by the Portuguese.
dead reckoning	Dead reckoning is a method of navigation that involves calculating one's position by noting one's speed, the speed and direction of the wind, ocean currents, and compass directions. Dead reckoning was used by sailors like Columbus.
Northwest Passage	A water route from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Arctic circle north of Canada and Alaska.

Project description:
Your job is to research the life of an explorer. This is a partner activity and you will be expected to research both independently and together. You are expected to research biographical information including major events in the explorer’s life, voyages, and the impact of his or her discoveries. Using a note-taking format, you need to research the following aspects of your explorer’s life:

childhood, country & family
motivation and experiences to explore
major voyages
discoveries
contact with indigenous peoples
consequences & impact of voyages
any other interesting facts

You are expected to use at least 2 sources & keep a bibliography

Goals: Your information will be shared in a short presentation – in an interview format. One partner should be the explorer. You need to write a script which should answer (at least) the points listed above. Create a setting and circumstance for your interview. Your goal is to make your presentation informative, realistic, natural, and interesting. You and your partner will be making your presentation in front of an audience of your peers, teachers, and parents.

Script Writing Tips

Below are different tips on how to write a good script. Try your best to employ some of them when writing the script for your interview.

Screen Writing Tips:

1. Come up with a specific idea of what you want to happen in the interview. Create the premise and purpose of that story. What is the situation and what are the goals of the story and main characters involved?

2. Your characters will drive the action so make sure you make them interesting and innovative.

3. Create an outline of your setting first before you begin actually writing dialogue and the script. It might help to create a basic roadmap of what will happen in your story. Sketch out a general plan and envision how the interview will unfold.

4. Remember, scripts are all about action and dialogue. Make sure your characters speak realistically, and try not to mix styles of speech and vocabulary too much unless you are going for a certain effect.

5. Set the scene. Don't forget to include important details such as time of day, setting, and actions of the characters in the scene. These are nearly as important as the dialogue that occurs.

6. Edit yourself and continually revise your writing, and, if possible, show the script to a friend or teacher who has writing experience and can critique and improve the script as needed.

7. Words that should be stressed or said more clearly are written in bold or underlined.

8. Your script should have a cover page. It should clearly show the title and the author or authors of the interview.
